Make Safety Your Priority – SHENA

29 February 2020

Due to work related fatalities within industry in 2019, the Safety, Health and Environment National Authority (SHENA) as the national authority responsible for workplace safety and health, seeks the cooperation of all companies, employers and employees whilst undertaking any work activities which may have a potential to cause harm or injury to prioritise the safety and welfare of all persons concerned and to review their sites' HSE practices and procedures.

SHENA wishes to inform industry that it has commenced unannounced surveillance visits to workplaces across Brunei Darussalam and will continue to undertake such visits to verify compliance with HSE legislative requirements under the Workplace Safety and Health Order, 2009 and strongly warns that stern actions will be taken against companies who fail to comply. In undertaking such visits, SHENA Inspectors will be identified by their SHENA work vests and identification cards.

Further, SHENA has rolled out a number of Industry Guidance Notes (IGN) on Lifting Operations, Workplace Safety and Health in Construction Sites, Guidance to Confined Space as well as Guidelines for the Safe Use of Scaffolding which are now available on the SHENA website www.shena.gov.bn

The law also requires that reportable workplace incidents must be reported to SHENA by completing an Initial Incident Notification (IIN) form that is available on the SHENA website and submitting the same to IIN@energy.gov.bn. A SHENA Duty Officer is also reachable at +673 7332200 to receive incident reports.
