03 June 2025

Tuesday, 3 June 2025 – The Safety, Health and Environment National Authority (SHENA), in collaboration with the United States Department of Energy (DOE), successfully conducted a four-day national workshop on nuclear safeguards. This initiative aimed to improve awareness and capacity for effective nuclear safeguards obligations, reaffirming SHENA’s commitment to strengthening nuclear governance in Brunei Darussalam.

Over 30 participants from key government agencies attended the workshop at the Empire Hotel, with esteemed experts from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and Singapore’s National Environment Agency (NEA) sharing their insights and best practices and technical insights.

The workshop marks a significant step in Brunei Darussalam’s efforts to enhance its safeguards system. It focused on deepening understanding of the international safeguards framework and fostering national collaboration among key government stakeholders, reinforcing the nation's commitment to the peaceful use of nuclear technology.

Yang Mulia Hajah Farida binti Dato Seri Paduka Haji Talib, Permanent Secretary (Energy) at the Prime Minister’s Office, served as the Guest of Honour. In her statement, she emphasized that the workshop provides a valuable opportunity to strengthen Brunei Darussalam’s safeguards capacity and reaffirm the country’s commitment to the peaceful, safe, and secure use of nuclear materials.

Since becoming a member state of the IAEA in 2014, Brunei Darussalam has continually emphasized the enhancement of safe and secure management of radioactive and nuclear materials, in line with its international obligations.

The four-day workshop brought together safeguards experts for presentations and discussions aimed at strengthening Brunei Darussalam’s safeguards obligations. This workshop also provided guidance on implementing the Additional Protocol to Brunei Darussalam’s Comprehensive Safeguards Agreement with the IAEA, underscoring the country’s commitment to global non-proliferation efforts.

Through continued collaboration with international organisations and partners such as the IAEA and the U.S. Department of Energy, Brunei Darussalam remains committed to ensuring that all nuclear-related activities are effectively regulated to safeguard the well-being of workers, the public, and the environment.
