SHENA strengthens Radiation Protection with launch of two key facilities
28 April 2025
Monday, 28 April 2025 – The Safety, Health and Environment National Authority (SHENA) officially launched two radiation facilities — the Radiation Dosimetry Service Laboratory and the Gamma Dose Rate Monitoring Station — underscoring its effort and commitment to enhancing radiation protection and emergency preparedness in Brunei Darussalam.
The launch ceremony, which was held in conjunction with the World Day for Safety and Health at Work 2025, is celebrated every year on the 28th of April, was officiated by Yang Mulia Dato Seri Paduka Awang Haji Sufian bin Haji Sabtu, Acting Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office, in his capacity as Chairman of the SHENA Board of Directors.
As a member state of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) since 2014, Brunei Darussalam continues to benefit from numerous technical cooperation projects supported by relevant national agencies. The inauguration of these facilities marks a significant milestone in SHENA’s ongoing efforts to safeguard radiation workers, the public and the environment.
The Radiation Dosimetry Service Laboratory represents a key advancement in occupational radiation monitoring. It ensures compliance with regulatory dose limits and enhances the protection of radiation-exposed workers in the industrial and medical sectors.
Meanwhile, the Gamma Dose Rate Monitoring Station functions as a continuous monitoring system to be able to control radiation risks by detecting abnormal radiation levels in the environment. It also allows early warning and action in the event of any nuclear or radiological incidents in the region.
Both establishments, located at Jalan Perayaan, Bandar Seri Begawan, reinforce SHENA’s regulatory role in strengthening and enhancing resilience in radiation safety and emergency response.
