The Roadshow for SHENA Safety Month 2023 kicks off in Temburong

Tuesday, 16 May 2023 – The District of Temburong hosted the first Safety, Health and Environment National Authority (SHENA) roadshow that received a good turnout. It being a pivot of the SHENA Safety Month, its success was partly due to the support that was given by participating stakeholders that showed strong commitment in instilling reasonable safety and health practices at their workplace.

The roadshow comprises an array of showcases, talk series, and interactive games, and it was encouraging to be able to engage the general public, students and industry stakeholders with knowledge exchanged and dialogue on elevating workplace safety and health standards held.

The roadshow also spotlighted key SHENA initiatives that firmly underscored SHENA's unwavering commitment to creating and sustaining a safe, healthy, and productive working environment such as the #SAFEKIDSBN and Website Kiosk that aim to educate children and young adults on safety and health using Virtual Reality technology and the newly launched website, providing user-friendly access to SHENA's resources and information including means to report incidents and Workplace Safety and Health as well as Radiation concerns.

Radiation safety was showcased during the roadshow to provide awareness and better understanding on the subject matter by displaying several equipment such as hand-held detectors to monitor the level of radiation exposure in a particular environment. Radiation exposure of radiation workers and members of the public should be kept As Low As Reasonably Achievable through the principles of radiation protection.

There was strong participation from several government agencies and companies, including the MPEC Secretariat, JobCentre Brunei, Lifelong Learning Centre L3, Brunei International Air Cargo Centre (BIACC), SynergenOG (B) Sdn. Bhd., and EX-TG Zones Consultant & Services.

Presentations delivered during the roadshow provided an overview of the regulations and guidelines enforced by SHENA; review of the safety and health performance of workplaces in 2022; enforcement actions taken by SHENA on cases of non-compliance; socialising the necessity for accurate and prompt reporting of workplace incidents, and the protocols for managing and controlling major accident hazards in high-risk industries.

Present at the event were Yang Mulia Pengiran Muhammad Ameer Mubaarak bin Pengiran Haji Hashim, District Officer at the Temburong District Office as the Guest of Honour and Yang Berhormat Haji Sulaiman bin Haji Nasir, Temburong District representative for the Legislative Council. Representing SHENA as the event host was Yang Mulia Mohd Yusof Bin Haji Mohd Taufik, Director of Investigation and Response Division.

The event concluded with the prize presentation to the winners of Play & Win: Test your safety knowledge; Yang Mulia Dayang Cheong Sui Lan, Yang Mulia Awang Maz Khairuddin bin Mohidin and Yang Mulia Dayang Siti Nabilah binti Haji Abu Nipah.

This event commemorates the World Day for Safety and Health at Work, an annual global event celebrated on 28 April that promotes the importance of safety, healthy, and decent working conditions.
