Safety, Health and Environment National Authority Order 2018 promulgated

HIS Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam has consented to promulgate the Safety, Health and Environment National Authority Order 2018, which came into being on April 1, 2017.

The setting in motion of this Order means that the Safety, Health and Environment National Authority (SHENA) is now officially established.

In a statement issued by the Ministry of Energy, Manpower and Industry, SHENA will hold functions and powers encompassing regulations and enforcement with respect to the Workplace Safety and Health Order 2009 and its supporting Regulationsto ensure the general safety and health at all workplaces and on work activities; as well as the Environmental Protection and Management Order (EPMO) 2016, to provide for the protection and management of the environment and for other purposes connected therewith.

The authority will ensure Brunei is a safe place to work and live in.

It will coordinate all Safety, Health and Environmental (HSE) matters associated with industrial activities in Brunei; this includes sectors such as oil and gas, petrochemicals, onshore industrial projects, as well as non-industrial sectors such as offices, schools and hospitals.

An event to officially launch SHENA will be announced on a later date, followed by awareness campaign and roadshows across the country, the statement added.

SHENA’s office is located at Level 4 of the Design and Technology Building, Simpang 32-37, Kampong Anggerek Desa, Bandar Seri Begawan.
