SHENA cautions against use of uncertified lifts
15 May 2020
The Safety, Health and Environment National Authority (SHENA) reminds all principals, occupiers, employers and self-employed persons, of their general duties under the Workplace Safety and Health Order, 2009 to ensure the safety of their employees and other persons not employed by them is not compromised.
SHENA would like to highlight to all principals, occupiers, employers and self-employed persons who are lift owners or any person responsible for the safe operation of any lift used to carry goods or passengers that they have legal responsibilities to adhere to under the Workplace Safety and Health (General Provisions) Regulations, 2014 , which can be found at the SHENA website: www.shena.gov.bn.
Lifts are generally fitted with a number of safety features like safety brakes, door sensors, door closing devices, emergency evacuation features, emergency lighting, emergency power and fire emergency systems, among other safety considerations. The Workplace Safety and Health (General Provisions) Regulations, 2014 requires that all lifts provided for use in work activities are thoroughly examined by an Authorised Examiner at regular intervals, that is once every six months. This applies to lifts and hoists used to transport persons and loads.
SHENA would like to warn all principals, occupiers, employers and self-employed persons that continued usage and utilisation of a lift that has not been maintained or examined and certified fit for use by an authorised examiner is an offence under the Workplace Safety and Health (General Provisions) Regulations, 2014.
In addition, under the Workplace Safety and Health (Risk Management) Regulations, 2014, all principals, occupiers, employers and self-employed persons are required to undertake a risk assessment particular to their activity in relation to the safety and health risks posed to any person and shall take all reasonably practicable steps to eliminate any foreseeable risk to any person in the workplace, prior to commencing their work on site.
Should there be any questions concerning the operation of lifts, please contact SHENA at +673 238 2000 or email info@shena.gov.bn
