The Safety, Health and Environment National Authority (SHENA), the national authority which regulates workplace safety, health and environment as well as radiation matters reminds all waste collection companies and those involved in the collection, transport and disposal of waste to prohibit unsafe work practices and behavior such as workers hanging onto the sides and the backs of garbage trucks while in motion. Suitable personal protective equipment (PPE) such as protective gloves, high visibility coverall or vest as well as safety shoes among others should also be worn by the workers at all times. Unsafe practices and behavior may endanger the safety and wellbeing of the worker and members of the public within the vicinity of the activity.

Under section 12 of the Workplace Safety and Health Order, 2009 (WSHO), the duties of employers include taking necessary measures to ensure the safety and health of his employees and other persons such as members of the public. Employers should also provide sufficient instruction, training and supervision, among others, that is necessary for the workers to perform their task safely.

The Department of Environment, Parks and Recreation (JASTRe) would like to remind all waste collection companies registered with JASTRe to be in compliance with any relevant directives or regulations, including matters related to the safety of their workers, at all times. Failure to do so, JASTRe reserves the right to suspend or revoke the approval to carry out waste collection service issued to the companies at any time.
